LPI, Inc. provided engineering services for evaluation of four galvanized No. 5 rebar sections. Two of the rebar samples, rods 1 and 2, were hot dipped galvanized and the two other samples, rods 3 and 4, were continuously galvanized. The purpose of the evaluation was to perform testing to compare the coatings between the hot dipped rebar and the continuously galvanized rebar.
Metallographic cross-section specimens were prepared from each rebar to determine the thickness of the galvanized layer in accordance with ASTM B487. Results of the testing indicated that the hot dipped galvanized rebars exhibited average layer thicknesses of 223μm and 248μm while the continuously galvanized rebars exhibited average layer thicknesses of 50μm and 67μm.
